Amandla

In Zulu, Xhosa, and Ndebele usage, *amandla* functions as an everyday term denoting strength or power, both physical and symbolic. Beyond its literal sense, the word carries strong communal meaning, reflecting shared resilience and authority within society.

The term gained international recognition during South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement in the 20th century through the rallying call “Amandla! Awethu!”—a response chant meaning “Power! It is ours!” This slogan became a defining expression of resistance and solidarity, firmly embedding the word in modern political history.

Because of its powerful associations with empowerment and justice, Amandla began to appear as a personal name, chosen to express hope, dignity, and collective strength.
