Nehorai reflects an Aramaic linguistic background closely connected with early rabbinic culture. The root נהר (n-h-r) in Aramaic carries the meaning “to shine” or “to give light,” and from it comes the noun נהורא (nehora), meaning “light.” The name therefore belongs to a family of Semitic names built around imagery of illumination, clarity, and radiance.

The name is known from rabbinic literature through Rabbi Nehorai, a sage mentioned in the Mishnah. In some traditional sources, Nehorai is treated as an alternative name for Rabbi Meir, reinforcing the association of the name with scholarship and intellectual illumination.
