Nuh

In Islamic tradition, Nuh (نوح) holds a central and deeply revered place as one of the earliest prophets sent to guide humanity. His story appears in multiple chapters (surahs) of the Qur’an, most notably in Surah Nūḥ (71), which is named directly after him. The Qur’anic portrayal emphasizes his extraordinary patience and determination as he called his people to monotheism over many years despite rejection and mockery.

Classical Islamic scholarship often identifies Nuh as one of the five great prophets known as Ulū al-‘Azm, distinguished by exceptional steadfastness. His lifespan is described in the Qur’an as extending nine hundred and fifty years among his people, symbolizing prolonged commitment to guidance. Because of this, the name Nuh came to embody endurance, resilience, and loyalty to faith under adversity.

Across Arabic-speaking societies, Nuh has long been used as a respected prophetic name. As Islam spread, the name traveled into Turkish, Persian-influenced regions, Central Asia, and beyond. In Turkish, Uzbek, Tajik, and Kyrgyz contexts, Nuh retains its Qur’anic spelling and pronunciation with minimal alteration. Its concise, single-syllable structure contributes to its clarity and strength across languages.

While directly linked to the biblical figure Noah, Nuh functions within Islamic culture as an independent religious reference shaped by Qur’anic theology and interpretation.
